Team Suzuki Alstare rider Leon Haslam didn’t chase lap times in today’s first qualifying session at Phillip Island, Australia but still ended with the third fastest lap of the day. The young Briton worked all day trying to find a good race set-up and opted not to use any soft compound tyres during the timed session this afternoon, when his best lap was set on race rubber.

Stiggy Racing Honda rider Leon Haslam opened the first day Magny-Cours by posting the second fastest time in the first free practice session. Haslam, who rode here last in 2004, quickly found his pace at the 4.441km French circuit to further improve his lap times. He set his fastest time of the day in the afternoon's qualifying session with a lap of 1'39.900s.
